What it involves
Surgery for gastric ulcer disease is used to treat ulcers that have caused complications, such as bleeding or perforation, or that have not responded to medical treatment. Vagotomy involves dividing branches of the vagus nerve to reduce stomach acid production, and may be performed alongside other procedures depending on the clinical situation.
Why it may be recommended
Surgery may be recommended for complications of peptic ulcer disease, such as bleeding that cannot be controlled endoscopically, or perforation requiring urgent repair.
Preparing for surgery
Follow the fasting instructions provided for your operation. The practice should be informed of all regular medication, especially blood thinners.
What to expect afterwards
Before discharge, you will receive procedure-specific instructions regarding pain medication, diet/activity, wound care and follow-up.

Gastric ulcer surgery requires hospital admission, with the length of stay depending on the nature of the surgery and any complications present.
