What it involves
An abscess is a collection of pus caused by infection. Drainage involves surgically opening and draining the abscess to remove infected material and allow the area to heal, often accompanied by antibiotics where indicated.
Why it may be recommended
Drainage is generally recommended for abscesses that have not resolved with antibiotics alone, to relieve symptoms and treat the underlying infection.

Follow the fasting instructions provided for your operation, where applicable. The practice should be informed of all regular medication.
What to expect afterwards
Before discharge, you will receive procedure-specific instructions regarding pain medication, wound care and follow-up.
Day case or hospital admission
Many abscess drainage procedures can be performed as day cases, depending on the size and location of the abscess.
