Gastrectomy is the surgical removal of part (partial gastrectomy) or all (total gastrectomy) of the stomach. The extent of surgery depends on the underlying condition and its location.
Why it may be recommended
Gastrectomy may be recommended for conditions such as stomach cancer, or in selected cases of severe or complicated ulcer disease not manageable by other means.
Preparing for surgery
Follow the fasting instructions provided for your operation. The practice should be informed of all regular medication, especially blood thinners, diabetes medication and weight-loss medication.
What to expect afterwards
Before discharge, you will receive procedure-specific instructions regarding pain medication, diet/activity, wound care and follow-up.
Day case or hospital admission
Gastrectomy requires hospital admission, with the length of stay depending on the extent of surgery and individual recovery.
