Hernia Repair
Surgical repair of inguinal, femoral, umbilical and incisional hernias, using laparoscopic (keyhole) or open techniques depending on the type and complexity of the hernia.
What it involves
A hernia occurs when tissue pushes through a weakness in the abdominal wall. Repair involves returning the tissue to its normal position and reinforcing the weakened area, often with a surgical mesh. Dr Vosloo will assess your hernia and recommend whether a laparoscopic or open approach is most suitable, taking into account the size, location and type of hernia, as well as your general health.
Complex abdominal wall reconstruction
For larger or recurrent hernias, more extensive abdominal wall reconstruction may be required. This is planned individually and discussed in detail during consultation.
Preparing for surgery
You will be given fasting instructions and guidance on any medication changes needed before your procedure, particularly blood thinners or diabetes medication. Please inform the practice of all medication you take.
What to expect afterwards
Recovery time varies depending on the size and type of hernia repaired and the surgical approach used. You will receive specific guidance on activity, lifting and return to work before you leave hospital.
Day case or hospital admission
Many hernia repairs can be done as day procedures, though this depends on individual circumstances and will be confirmed with you beforehand.
