What it involves
Complex abdominal wall reconstruction is a more extensive form of hernia repair, used for large, recurrent or complicated hernias where the abdominal wall requires significant reinforcement. It may involve mesh placement and techniques to restore the structural integrity of the abdominal wall.
Why it may be recommended
This approach may be recommended where a standard hernia repair is unlikely to be sufficient, such as with large defects, recurrent hernias, or hernias associated with significant loss of abdominal wall tissue.
Preparing for surgery
Follow the fasting instructions provided for your operation. The practice should be informed of all regular medication, especially blood thinners, diabetes medication and weight-loss medication.
What to expect afterwards
Before discharge, you will receive procedure-specific instructions regarding pain medication, diet/activity, wound care and follow-up.
Day case or hospital admission
Given the complexity of this surgery, hospital admission is generally required, with the length of stay depending on the extent of reconstruction performed.
