What it involves
An appendicectomy is the surgical removal of the appendix, most commonly performed as an urgent procedure to treat acute appendicitis. Appendicitis occurs when the appendix becomes inflamed and, if left untreated, can progress to rupture -yes making prompt diagnosis and surgery important for a safe recovery.
Why it may be recommended
Appendicectomy is recommended for acute appendicitis, to relieve symptoms and reduce the risk of complications such as perforation or the spread of infection within the abdomen. Diagnosis is usually based on clinical examination, symptom history, and blood tests to check for signs of infection or inflammation. Imaging such as an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan may also be used to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other causes of abdominal pain. Because appendicitis can progress quickly and the risk of rupture increases with delay, surgery is often arranged urgently – sometimes the same day the diagnosis is confirmed.
Preparing for surgery
Please follow the fasting instructions provided for your operation, and inform the practice of all regular medication you are taking, including blood thinners and supplements. As appendicectomy is frequently performed urgently, preparation time may be limited compared to planned procedures – the practice will guide you through what is needed once the diagnosis is confirmed and surgery is arranged.
What to expect afterwards
Before discharge, you will receive procedure-specific instructions regarding pain medication, diet/activity, wound care and follow-up.
Day case or hospital admission
Appendicectomy requires hospital admission. The length of stay depends on the severity of the appendicitis and any complications found at surgery.
